Noramfaizul Mohd Nor managed to call his wife before he died

TV3 cameraman also injured in rebel shooting

KUALA LUMPUR: BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor, 41, was killed, while TV3 cameraman Aji Saregar Mazlan was injured, after the Malaysian media team’s truck was hit by stray bullets during an attack by rebel forces in Mogadishu, Somalia, last night.

The two were in Somalia to provide media coverage for the Putera 1Malaysia Club for the humanitarian aid mission in the African country.
According to Khairulanuar Yahaya, a BernamaTV journalist, Noramfaizul, who was with other members of the electronic media, were on a truck heading towards Mogadishu’s commercial centre to send visuals that were recorded earlier.

The truck they were in was hit by stray bullets.

Khairulanuar said the shots were fired at a government army truck that was accompanying the media vehicle, and a stray bullet hit Noramfaizul, who was seated by the door.
The bullet pierced through the BernamaTV camerman’s lungs.

He died while receiving medical attention.

Aji Saregar sustained injuries in his right arm.
He is reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.

The incident happened at 10.30pm Malaysian time.
Noramfaizul passed away at 11.07pm (Malaysian time) which is five hours ahead of Mogadishu.
Since their arrival, the humanitarian mission and members of the Malaysian media were heavily guarded by government forces as they went about their tasks.
The humanitarian mission to Somalia arrived in Mogadishu on Aug 28 and is expected to return on Sept 8.
Following the incident, all volunteers and media personnel will be evacuated from Mogadishu as soon as possible by the Royal Malaysian Air Force through a Charlie airplane which is currently based in the Seychelles Islands, about three hours away.
Berita Harian reporter Nor Azizah Mokhtar who is covering the mission said all the volunteers and media personnel were currently safe with tight security provided by the government forces.
